Candy Corn

I think there are two kinds of people in this world, the ones that love Halloween and those that don't.  I would be in the latter category.

For the last 6 years, I've just kept the lights off if I was home or else I planned to be gone on Halloween evening.  When my kids were young I would half-heartedly help them with costumes. I never volunteered to host Halloween parties.  Hubby and I hate to dress in costume and avoid all Halloween parties.

I don't crave the candy.  That being said, I do like a taste of candy corn at least once during the season.  Perhaps the only confection sweeter would be "Peeps".  These candies are so ridiculously sweet my teeth hurt after a few chews.  So what to do with the rest of the bag of those three-tone kernels?

If you need more Candy Corn in your life...

Ginger Snap Cookies

As soon as there is a nip in the air I start to crave Ginger Snap Cookies.

These are a favorite with little bits of chewy, crystallized ginger in the cookies.

These cookies are really crunchy with a nice spice.

I may have to try THIS RECIPE for ginger snaps.  Joyofbaking gives lots of tips on how to customize the cookies to your taste.  You can make them as spicy, ginger-y, or robust with molasses as you wish.  Just make sure your spices are fresh.

Do you have a ginger snap fetish?  What brand or recipe do you like?

Easing into Autumn

I am beginning to embrace autumn.  I started with the purchase of a mum and decided to replace my pot of annuals with some hardier plants that will eventually withstand frost.

Yes, that is Swiss chard in the pot.  It is hardy and colorful.  The $1.50 mum, not yet in full bloom is kept in the pot and can be replaced when the blooms have died.  The other plants were greatly reduced at the nursery.

I got my inspiration from this Pinterest find.

I did not use these colors but the inspiration is to use plants with varied color and texture in the foliage and not rely on flowers.  It also gave the suggestion of using edible plants such as kale and chard.  For me, it is still too early in the season to welcome pumpkins.

Have a wonderful weekend.  See you on Monday.

Virtual shopping

I am slowly starting to think about autumn.  Shopping for a few transition pieces is a good way to begin.  A little virtual shopping from Club Monaco.  They are featuring quite a bit of navy with khaki given a punch from deep jewel tones such as emerald and ruby.

Pinterest Halloween Inspiration

I can't believe October is almost gone and Halloween is on Monday.  Here are a few "pins" from my Pinterest "Autumn Inspiration" board.  Maybe you'll be inspired for some Halloween decor or costume.

Happy Weekend

Monday Musings

It was a lovely, colorful weekend here in southeast Michigan.
Probably the last week of colorful leaves.

No killing frost yet and I still have cilantro and lettuce in my otherwise barren garden.

I had my love seats reupholstered and I love the way they look in my living room.
I like the fall shoe trend of penny loafer pumps.  I think they look great with tights and skirts or pants and jeans.  I better get a pair before it snows and then all I'll wear is boots.

Hope you are refreshed from a great weekend and ready to welcome the week.

Colorful Carrots

My local Farmer's Market is over for the season.   I'll have to travel to a neighboring community for fresh, farm produce, but oh, so worth the effort.
One of my last purchases was these gorgeous, colorful carrots.

To taste the true carrot flavor, I roasted the carrots at 400 degrees for about 35 minutes.  Adorned with only olive oil, salt, pepper and cumin seeds, they were caramelized, sweet and tasty.

Are you a Farmer's Market shopper?  What is your favorite food purchase at the market?
Have a delicious day.

October Already!

Happy Monday, dear Spiral Style readers.
I hope you had a lovely weekend.  Can you believe it is October already?  This weekend felt like autumn with vivid blue skies and a crisp, chill in the air.  Some of the leaves are beginning to change color.  I made a collection while walking the puppy in a county park.

Autumn collection

Hubby and I took advantage of Detroit restaurant week and tried a new restaurant with friends.    I took this photo of my short ribs with my iphone.  Not a great photo but the food was good at Atlas Global Bistro.  It was the first time I ate pork belly.  Yum!

Sunday evening was spent at the home of dear friends.  So I had a little break from cooking except for homemade applesauce from Farmers Market apples.  I did find the need to bake so I tried the Walnut Apricot Harvest Loaf from Sweet Paul, the online magazine.

This loaf is hearty with whole wheat goodness, sweet with dried apricots and studded with chopped walnuts.  Great for lunch boxes and coffee breaks.

Have a wonderful start to your week.

Monday Musings: Autumn

No denying that autumn is here so a little autumnal decor is in order.  A mum from the Farmers Market is a perfect solution.

When fall arrives, I like to use seasonal produce.  I couldn't resist the butternut squash at the market.

Sage is an herb I tend to reserve for the autumn months.  I guess it is because I associate it with Thanksgiving.  It is a pretty looking herb and very pungent.  I love it with white beans and sausage as well as turkey, chicken and pork.

The butternut squash was roasted and combined with bacon and sage for this risotto.  You can view the recipe here.  This Risotto with Butternut Squash and Sage would be perfect for Meatless Monday.  If you are really strict about being meatless, use vegetarian broth and eliminate the bacon.

Dimply Plum Cake Baking, from my home to yours by Dorie Greenspan

A plum cake for dessert or breakfast.  See blog post here.  This is a favorite with hubby for a mid-morning snack at work.

I hope you had a relaxing weekend and got to spend some time outdoors.  Have a fabulous Monday.  XXOO
